چکیده

The application of low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes for use in high-density magnetic recording channels is considered. A first order position jitter model is assumed in order to include the effect of signal dependent transition noise present in high density longitudinal thin film recording. Coding gains using pattern dependent noise-predictive soft detection to account for the transition noise are also determined via simulation. Results show that LDPC code performance degrades in equalized (colored) additive noise, but exhibits remarkable performance in the presence of signal dependent transition noise, especially when used in conjunction with an appropriately optimized detector.

Perpendicular and Longitudinal Recording: A Signal-Processing and Coding Perspective

Equalization and noise prediction followed by sequence detection and postprocessing are studied for double-layer perpendicular recording channels that are corrupted by electronics and transition noise. The performance of various outer coding schemes, such as conventional Reed– Solomon (RS) codes with 8-bit and 10-bit symbols and low-density parity check (LDPC) codes, is evaluated, and a signal-...

Reduced-Complexity Decoding of Q-ary LDPC Codes for Magnetic Recording

Binary low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes perform very well on magnetic recording channels (MRCs) with additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN). However, an MRC is subject to other impairments, such as media defects and thermal asperities. Binary LDPC codes may not be able to cope with these impairments without the help of a Reed–Solomon code. A better form of coding may be -ary LDPC codes, whic...

GTTI 2008: sessione Trasmissione Numerica Non-binary LDPC codes with good performance on channels affected by bursty noise

Non-binary Reed-Solomon (RS) codes represent a typical way to counteract the effects of error bursts in hard-disk drives (HDD). Recently, it has been demonstrated how q-ary low-density paritycheck (LDPC) codes can outperform RS codes through a proper construction of the parity check (PC) matrix. In this work, two matrix design schemes, based on the main definitions of erasure burst proposed in ...

Low-Density Parity-Check Codes for Data Storage and

For high density magnetic recording channels and memory systems, low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes with probabilistic decoding are replacing Reed-Solomon (RS) codes or Bose-Chaudhuri-Hocquenghem (BCH) codes with conventional algebraic decoding. The main benefit of LDPC codes over the RS and BCH codes is that LDPC codes can provide lower error probabilities than equivalent conventional codes...

Application of MTR soft-decision decoding in multiple-head magnetic recording systems

Application of a simple approach for the soft-decision decoding of Maximum-Transition-Run (MTR) codes has been presented in this paper. A lowdemanded hardware realization have been proposed for soft-decision decoding in MTR basic AND, OR and XOR logic circuits. The suggested approach is explored over the two-track, two-head EPR4 partial response magnetic recording system. The overall two-track ...
